PCa Support Forum

Here is a quote about prostate cancer from Charles Myers, MD

WITHOUT A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL SHOWING AN IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALL SURVIVAL, RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY SHOULD NOT BE ACCEPTED AS STANDARD TREATMENT FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED MEN WITH PROSTATE CANCER, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WITH A GLEASON SCORE OF 6 OR BELOW AND A PSA UNDER 10 NG/ML. IT IS TOO DAMAGING FOR THE PATIENT AND TOO EXPENSIVE FOR OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM TO BE ACCEPTED WHEN WE STILL LACK PROOF OF ITS EFFECTIVENESS.

At the time this quote was given the radical prostatectomy for treating prostate cancer had failed two randomized controlled trials. In a more recent, third randomized controlled study, 95% of the men did not benefit from surgery.
