There is little controlled scientific evidence that men with prostate
cancer live any longer with surgery than without it. In fact, there are
two randomized controlled studies that conclude that surgery fails to extend life. The second was conducted by L. Holmberg, A. Bill-Axelson and 12 others was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine 2002 (September). A third randomized controlled study, which was actually a folllow up of the second one above, only found a 5% increase in survival after 10 years of suffering side effects from surgery.
