RP PSA Failure

"Prostate cancer recurrence generally occurs in 30% to 50% of patients within 10 years after radical prostatectomy and is first indicated by an increased serum value of prostate specific antigen (PSA)."

Source: (Scattoni V, Montorsi F, Picchio M, Fazio F, Roscigno M, Salonia A, Rigatti P: Techniques for Detecting Recurrent Prostate Cancer after Radical Prostatectomy. The American Journal of Urology Review. November 2004, Vol. 2, No. 11, page 555 560.)

Additional Reference for prostate cancer recurrence after radical prostatecomy:

Han M, Partin AW, Zahurak M, et al. Biochemical (prostate specific antigen) recurrence probability following radical prostatectomy for clinically localized prostate cancer. Journal of Urology. 2003;169:517-523.

What PSA value indicates a recurrence of prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy?

Studies have used the following PSA values to indicate recurrence of prostate cancer after surgery:

>0.1 ng/mL
> 0.2 ng/mL
> 0.4 ng/mL
> 0.5 ng/mL

Some studies have used two consecutive values of greater than or equal to 0.2 ng/mL, and as of this writing 0.2 ng/mL seems to have some consensus as the value to use for indicating a biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer after the radical prostatectomy.
